Welcome to New Hope Preparatory School—the oldest Seventh-day Adventist school in Jamaica, established in 1897. For over a century, we have remained committed to shaping the lives of generations of learners through our strong focus on spiritual, academic, and personal development. Owned and operated by the North Street Seventh-day Adventist Church and supported by the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, our school is a beacon of hope and excellence in the heart of Kingston.
Throughout our long and vibrant history, New Hope has endured and overcome numerous challenges. Once located at Text Lane, we now operate at our permanent home at 56 James Street, at the corner of James Street and the prominent North Street, proudly standing alongside other esteemed educational institutions. Though our secondary division has seen periods of closure and reopening, we currently operate thriving Early Childhood and Primary Divisions. Our motto, “Higher and Still Higher”, captures the enduring vision of our founding fathers—a vision that continues to inspire our mission today.
The school environment is often described by parents as warm and family-oriented, making it ideal for learning and growth. On June 10, 2003, we celebrated the opening of the newly constructed G.C. Carr Wing. Twenty years later, the upper level was completed and named in honor of the late Elder Norris Crooks, who played a key role in its construction. In 2012, the school received the Most Improved School Award at the EJC Distinguished Faculty and Staff Award Ceremony.
Over the years, New Hope has been led by several distinguished principals whose leadership and legacy live on. Some of these include Guy Johnson, Bernard Gordon, Keith Sookie, Mrs. Brown Mignott, Pearless Scott, Velma Ferguson, Mr. Lambert Forrest, and Mrs. Smith Jumpp. Our current principal, Mrs. Sharon Whyte, continues to uphold the tradition of excellence and dedication. Notably, several past principals have also lent their names to our Sport Houses: Holland Thompson (Yellow), Melbourne Turgott (Red), and Sharon Bougle (Blue).
Our Commitment
- Spiritual Development
First, we seek to provide a nurturing Christian environment in which each child can grow into a fulfilled individual—spiritually, intellectually, ethically, and morally. We encourage our students to embrace Christian attitudes and to develop a personal relationship with Christ, ideally culminating in baptism at the appropriate time. - Academic Excellence
Second, we strive for high academic standards supported by consistent evaluation and the integration of technology. Our aim is to equip our students with the tools and skills necessary for ongoing educational success. Most of our students go on to traditional high schools, including Kingsway High School. - Character Building
Finally, we emphasize the development of life skills and values such as cooperation, kindness, industry, compassion, and above all—integrity. These traits are modeled and taught by our dedicated, competent, Christian professionals who carefully plan and deliver a holistic education experience.
