Our History

The New Hope Preparatory School, is the oldest Adventist school in Jamaica having been established in 1897. It is owned and operated by the North Street Seventh-day Adventist Church, receiving subsidy and supervision from the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. In its long history it has survived many challenges and has seen many changes including relocation from Text Lane to its present site at 56 James Street. Among the challenges being experienced, the secondary division was closed and reopened on more than one occasion. Currently, the school operates a Early Childhood and Primary Division. Its Motto “Higher And Still Higher” – expresses the belief of her founding fathers, a belief which must be justified if New Hope  is to be a beacon of hope for its community.

The school is located at the corner of James Street and the prominent North Street, alongside other esteemed educational institutions. Many parents attest to the school’s warm, family-oriented atmosphere, which creates an ideal environment for learning.

On June 10 2003 the school saw the opening of the new constructed building; The G.C. Carr Wing. Twenty years later the upper level was completed and named after the late Elder Norris Crooks who was instrumental in erecting the main frame. In 2012, at the EJC Distinguished Faculty and Staff Award Ceremony, the school was awarded the most Improved School Award. Over the years, the school has been managed by many outstanding Principals, some of whose names have been given to Sport Houses; such as Holland Thompson (Yellow), Melbourne Turgott (Red), and Sharon Bougle (Blue).

Over the years, the school has been led by several distinguished principals, including Guy Johnson, Bernard Gordon, Keith Sookie, Mrs. Brown Mignott, Pearless Scott, Velma Ferguson, Mr. Lambert Forrest, and Mrs. Smith Jumpp. The current principal is Mrs. Sharon Whyte.

The school follows the Ministry of Education’s curriculum and integrates the faith-based philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, promoting continuous, holistic self-development.
